Useful Words and Phrases:

Ten Chi Jin No Ri-Do Wa Suru....Often referred to as "Ohtsuka`s Poem", and is describing the way to peace and harmony

Bun Bu Ryo Do:....Study and learn as much as you can in Martial Art.

Karate Wa Rei Ni Hajimari, Rei Ni Owaru:....Karate begins and ends with Respect.

Karate Ni Sente Nashi:....There is no first attack in Karate.

Wa No Michi O Kiwameyo:....Find Peace and Harmony within your life.


Age Juki:....Rising Punch.

Ai Gamae:....Same stance as your opponent.

Aiuchi:....Both sides attack at the same time.

Ai No Te:....Same side wrist hold.

Aka:.... Red

Arigato Gozai Mashita:... Thank you very much (also said in the formal bow at the end of a lesson)

Ashi Barai:....Foot sweep.

Atama:....Head.

Atemi Waza:....Striking Techniques.

Ayumi Ashi:....Moving, like Walking.

Barai:....Sweep/Block.

Bo:....Long stick used as a weapon.

Bokken:....Wooden Sword.

Budo:....The way of Martial Arts, (Fighting).

Bunkai:.... Fixed applications in Kata.

Bushido:....The Way of the Warrior.

Chidori Ashi (Ni Araku):....Sideways Body and Foot movement, as in Naihanchi Kata.

Chi Ren:.... Knowledge gained through training the mind.

Choku Zuki/Tsuki:....Short straight punch.

Chudan:....Mid section of the body.

Dan:...Level, or Degree. (As in Dan Grade).

Dachi/Tachi:.... Stance.

Do:.... Way/Path.

Doji Ni:....At the same time, together.

Dojo:....A place to practise.

Dojo Kun:....Etiquette in the training place.

Dozo:....Please.

Embusen:....Centre of attack in Kata.

Empi/Hiji:....Elbow.

Fudoshin:....Immovable mind/spirit.

Furiken:.... Swing Punch.

Gaijin:.... Non Japanese, (Foreigner).

Gaiwan:....Outside of the arm. (As in Gaiwan Uke.. Outer block/parry).

Gasshuku:....Special training camp. (Summer/Winter Course etc).

Gedan:....Lower area of body.

Gi:....Karate suit.

Go No Sen:....Your opponent attacks, you parry, and attack yourself.

Goshin Ho:....Self Defense Techniques.

Hai:.... Yes/I Understand.

Hiraki Ashi::....Body and Foot Movement as in Pinan Shodan.

Hiraki Koshi:....Opening of the hips, as in Naihanchi.

Hon A Te:.... Finishing Blow.

Ichi:.... 1 (Number).

Inashi:....Going outside of your opponents centre.

Inasu:.... Changing the direction of your opponents attack.

Irimi:....To enter into your opponents distance.

Ji Yu Kumite:.... Free Sparring.

Kaisetsu:....Evolving/Variable movements in Kata (Applications).

Kin Geri:....Groin Kick.

Kobo Ittai:....Defense and Attack together.

Kote Gaeshi:....Outward turning wrist bend.

Kote Hineri:....Inward turning wrist bend.

Maai:....Distance.

Maa:....Timing.

Muchime:....To control.

Mudana Chakara:....No unnecessary force/strength.

Mudana Doso:....No unnecessary body movement.

Mudana Waza:....No unnecessary technique.

Meotote (Meotode):....Husband and Wife hands...both hands working together, at the same time.

Nami Gaeshi:....Sweeping inward foot movement as in Naihanchi Kata.

Onegai Shimasu:.... Request, (please give us a good lesson) as said at the beginning of a lesson in the formal bows

Sei Chu Sen::....Centre line of body.

Sei Chu Men::....Opponents centre line.

Sei Chu Shin:....Centre of gravity.

Sen No Sen:....Your opponent attacks, you beat his timing to finish your attack first.

Sen Sen No Sen:....You read your opponents intention, and make a pre-emptive attack.

Sente Hisho:....Go No Sen, Sen No Sen, Sen Sen No Sen.

Shikaku:....Opponents blind spot.

Sogu:....Slicing action downward with the hand, to deflect an attack.

Soto:....Outer.

Sune Geri:....Shin Kick.

San I Ittai:....The three listed immediately below:

Ten Yi:....Change position.

Ten Tai:....With your body.

Ten Gi:....With technique. 

Tai Otoshi:....Body Drop, as in the first movement of Pinan nidan.

Tai Sabakai:....Body Management...how to move the body correctly to execute the technique properly.

Tenshin:....Hip movement in Naihanchi Kata.

Uke Mi:....Attacker.

Zanshin:....Focus, state of awareness.
